Roofing Materials Guide for Eastern Washington

Choosing the Right Roofing Material for Eastern WA

Eastern Washington’s climate presents specific roofing challenges: hot dry summers, cold winters, snow loads in higher elevations, and occasional ice dams. Here’s how the major roofing materials compare.

Asphalt Shingles

The most common roofing material in Eastern WA. Available in three-tab and architectural (dimensional) styles.

Metal Roofing

Growing in popularity across Eastern WA for both residential and agricultural buildings.

Underlayment — Don’t Skip This

Underlayment is your secondary water barrier. Eastern WA code requirements vary by elevation:

Ice Dam Protection

Ice dams form when heat escapes through the roof, melts snow, and refreezes at the eaves. Washington State Energy Code requires a minimum 24″ wide ice barrier (ice & water shield) at all eaves. In higher elevations (Kettle Falls, portions of Colville area), consider extending coverage further up the slope.

Snow Load Considerations

Check your local jurisdiction’s ground snow load requirements before selecting materials. Eastern WA varies significantly — from 20 psf in the lower valleys to 50+ psf at higher elevations. Your roofing system must be designed to handle the load.
