Floating shelves look simple — a clean board on the wall with no visible brackets — but getting them to stay put for the long haul depends on what’s behind your drywall and how your house handles our regional climate. - Masonry anchors or Tapcon-style screws if you’re mounting to a concrete or block wall (common in basements and some garages)
- Wood filler or caulk for finishing screw holes and gaps
Step-by-Step: How to Install a Floating Shelf
Step 1: Find and Mark Your Studs
This is the single most important step, and it’s the one people rush. Run your stud finder across the wall at the height you want the shelf, and mark both edges of each stud so you know its true center. In newer homes around Airway Heights, studs are almost always 16 inches on center, so once you find one, you can usually predict the rest. In older homes in Colville or Kettle Falls, don’t assume — plaster walls and older additions often have studs at irregular spacing, doubled studs near openings, or even full dimension 2x4s (actually 2 inches by 4 inches, not the 1.5×3.5 you get today) that change your hole layout.
If your stud finder struggles on plaster (common in older lath-and-plaster homes), try a small test hole in an inconspicuous spot or look for baseboard nail lines, which often indicate stud locations.
Step 2: Plan Shelf Length Around Stud Spacing
Before you buy a shelf, measure your stud layout and pick a length that lets your bracket hit at least two studs — ideally more for anything over 36 inches long. A 24-inch shelf spanning a single stud with one toggle anchor on the other end is fine for a few picture frames. A 48-inch shelf meant to hold hardcover books needs solid connection to two or three studs minimum.
Step 3: Mark Your Level Line
Use your level to draw a light pencil line at the exact height you want the shelf’s bottom or top edge (depending on your bracket style). A common comfortable height for living room or bedroom display shelves is 48 to 54 inches from the floor, but adjust based on what’s below the shelf — you’ll want clearance over a desk, headboard, or console.
Step 4: Mount the Bracket
For rod-style hidden brackets, hold the steel plate against the wall along your level line, mark where it lines up with your stud centers, then drill pilot holes into the studs before driving screws. Pilot holes matter more than people think — driving a large screw straight into dry, seasoned framing (common in older regional homes where the wood has fully cured over decades) without a pilot hole can split the stud or cause the screw to wander off-center.
For any anchor point that falls between studs, switch to a heavy-duty toggle bolt or metal cavity anchor rated for at least the load you expect that point to carry — never rely on a small plastic anchor for a load-bearing point on a floating shelf.
Step 5: Slide On and Secure the Shelf
Once the bracket is solidly screwed in and level, slide the shelf over the rods or onto the cleat. Check level again — sometimes shelves settle slightly once weight is on them. Many pro installers add a small dab of construction adhesive or a couple of hidden screws up through the underside of the shelf into the bracket to keep it from working loose over time, especially in a household with kids, pets, or a lot of door-slamming vibration.
Step 6: Finish the Edges
If there’s a small gap between the shelf and the wall, a bead of paintable caulk cleans up the line and helps stabilize the shelf against minor movement — useful given how much our wood-frame homes flex with seasonal humidity and temperature changes.
Matching Hardware to Your Wall Type
One size does not fit all when it comes to Eastern Washington walls. Here’s how to think through it.
Standard Drywall Over Wood Studs
This is what you’ll find in most homes built in the last 30-40 years, common throughout the Spokane area and newer developments near Airway Heights. Standard wood screws into studs, supplemented by toggle bolts at any non-stud anchor points, will handle the vast majority of residential floating shelf projects.
Lath and Plaster Walls
Common in older homes around Colville and Kettle Falls, plaster is harder and more brittle than drywall. Standard plastic expansion anchors can crack the plaster around the hole. Use metal toggle-style anchors instead, and always pilot-drill through the plaster’s hard skim coat before setting anchors to avoid spider-cracking.
Masonry and Concrete
Basements, some garages, and a handful of older foundations in the region have exposed block or poured concrete walls. For these, skip wood screws entirely and use masonry anchors or Tapcon-style concrete screws with a properly sized masonry drill bit. These walls can actually support heavier loads than a stud wall, provided the anchors are rated correctly and set to the right depth.
Exterior Walls and Moisture Considerations
If you’re mounting a shelf on an exterior wall, particularly in a home with older or inconsistent insulation, be aware that condensation behind the drywall can weaken anchors over time. This is more of a concern in unheated spaces like garages, mudrooms, or older additions that see big indoor-outdoor temperature swings through our winters. When in doubt, choose interior walls for heavier shelving.
Weight Limits and Avoiding Sag
Every bracket system has a stated weight rating — follow it, and build in a safety margin rather than pushing right up to the limit. A few practical numbers to keep in mind:
- Light-duty brackets (decorative shelves, small plants, picture frames): typically rated 15-25 lbs per shelf
- Mid-duty steel rod systems anchored to studs: often rated 50-75 lbs when properly installed across two or more studs
- Heavy-duty engineered brackets for solid wood shelving: can be rated 100+ lbs, but only when every anchor point is solidly in a stud or properly rated masonry/toggle anchor
Remember these ratings assume correct installation. A shelf rated for 75 lbs but installed with only one screw actually in a stud and the rest in drywall anchors will not perform anywhere near that rating. When you’re totaling up expected weight, don’t forget to count the shelf material itself — solid oak or walnut shelving can weigh considerably more than an engineered wood or laminate equivalent before you’ve put anything on it.
Signs of an Undersized Installation
Watch for a slight downward bow in the middle of a long shelf, screws that look like they’re backing out slightly, or small drywall cracks radiating from anchor points — all signs it’s time to add support or move to a heavier-duty bracket system.
Common Mistakes We See at the Counter

Skipping the Stud Finder Entirely
Eyeballing it or guessing based on outlet placement is a recipe for a shelf that pulls out of the wall within a few months, especially once it’s loaded with books or dishware.
Using the Wrong Anchor for the Wall
Grabbing whatever anchor is in the junk drawer instead of matching the anchor to plaster, drywall, or masonry is probably the number one cause of shelf failures we hear about.
Not Leveling Before Final Tightening
Snug down one screw first, check level, adjust, then finish tightening the rest. Fully tightening every screw before checking level almost guarantees a crooked shelf that’s a pain to fix afterward.
Ignoring Seasonal Wood Movement
Solid wood shelves installed bone-dry in the middle of a hot Eastern Washington summer can develop small gaps or shifts by winter as humidity changes. Choosing kiln-dried, sealed lumber and leaving a small expansion gap at the wall edges helps prevent cracking or visible movement later.
DIY or Call a Pro?
Most decorative shelves in living rooms, bedrooms, and home offices are entirely reasonable DIY projects if you’re comfortable with a drill, stud finder, and level. Standard drywall-over-stud walls in newer construction make this even more straightforward.
Consider calling in an experienced local contractor if:
- You’re working with older lath-and-plaster walls and unsure of stud spacing
- The shelf is long, made of heavy solid wood, or intended to hold significant weight like cookware or a large book collection
- You suspect there’s plumbing, electrical, or ductwork behind the wall you’re drilling into
