Do You Need a Railing, and How High Does It Need to Be?
This is the first question almost every customer asks, and the answer matters because it’s a life-safety issue, not just a style choice.
When a Guardrail Is Required
Under Washington and International Residential Code (IRC) guidelines, any deck, porch, or landing where the walking surface sits 30 inches or more above grade requires a guardrail. If your deck is lower than that, a railing isn’t code-required — though plenty of folks in the Spokane area add one anyway for peace of mind, especially with kids or pets around.
Minimum Height Requirements
Here’s where it gets a little confusing, and it’s worth double-checking with your local building department (Spokane County, Stevens County, or your city permit office) before you build:
- Decks under 30″ above grade: minimum 36″ guardrail height if you’re installing one
- Decks 30″ or more above grade: IRC minimum is 36″, but some Washington jurisdictions require 42″

Weak Post Attachment
This is the big one. Stretch that span and the top rail flexes more than it should, which both feels unsafe and can fail a structural load test. Getting Baluster Spacing Wrong
