2×4 vs. 2×6: Choosing the Right Stud Size for Your Wall
This is the single most common question we get at all three of our locations, and the answer depends on what the wall is doing.
Interior Nonbearing Walls
2×4 studs are the standard for interior partition walls that aren’t carrying roof or floor load. They’re cheaper, lighter to handle, and give you plenty of room for standard electrical and low-voltage wiring. If you’re just splitting a basement or adding a closet wall, 2×4 framing at 16 inches on center is the tried-and-true approach.
Exterior and Loadbearing Walls
For exterior walls, more and more of our customers — and most contractors working in colder parts of Washington — are framing with 2×6 studs instead of 2×4. The reason is simple: a 2×6 wall gives you roughly 5.5 inches of cavity depth versus 3.5 inches, which means significantly more room for insulation. In a climate where your furnace runs hard from November through February, that extra insulation depth pays for itself over time in comfort and utility costs.
2×6 framing also gives you more structural depth for tall walls, better nailing surface for heavier siding or stone veneer, and more flexibility if you’re running larger plumbing lines through exterior walls.
Lumber Grade: What to Actually Buy
Washington’s residential code references Hem-Fir stud grade or better as the minimum standard for wall studs. When you’re picking through the stud bin at our Airway Heights or Colville yard, look for:
- Straight lumber with minimal bow, crown, or twist
- Consistent moisture content — wet lumber will shrink and can cause nail pops and drywall cracking as it dries in place

Spending a little extra time sorting through the stack for straight, dry lumber saves you hours of frustration later — a bowed stud in the middle of a wall run can throw off your entire drywall surface.
Layout Basics: 16-Inch On-Center Spacing and the Two-Foot Grid
Good framing starts on the layout, not the saw. Before you cut a single stud, your bottom and top plates should be marked, squared, and checked against your rough openings.
Standard 16-Inch On-Center Layout
The baseline requirement under Washington’s residential code is that studs in exterior walls and interior partitions be spaced not more than 16 inches on center. This spacing lines up naturally with standard 4-foot-wide sheet goods — drywall, OSB, and plywood sheathing — so every third stud lands on a sheet edge. It’s the safe, code-compliant default for the vast majority of walls we help customers plan out.
24-Inch On-Center Advanced Framing
In some cases — particularly energy-focused new builds — advanced framing techniques allow 24-inch on-center spacing for 2×6 exterior walls, provided the design meets code and gets local approval. This approach uses fewer studs overall, which reduces thermal bridging (less solid wood conducting heat/cold through the wall) and leaves more room for insulation. If you’re planning this approach for a new home near Spokane or a remodel out in Colville, check with your local building department first — this isn’t automatically approved everywhere and may require an engineer’s sign-off or specific design documentation.
Marking Your Plates
A practical tip we give customers: lay your top and bottom plates side by side on sawhorses and mark them together with a square, rather than marking each one separately. This keeps your stud locations identical on both plates and prevents small measuring errors from creeping in as you go down a long wall run.
Wall Height Limits
Washington’s prescriptive framing rule caps standard exterior wall framing at 8 feet without additional engineering, and general framing guidance says loadbearing studs generally shouldn’t exceed 10 feet without an engineer reviewing the design. If you’re framing a great room with tall ceilings or a shop building with extra height, this is exactly the kind of project where a quick conversation with a designer or your local building department up front saves you a failed inspection later.
Plates, Corners, and Headers: The Details That Make a Wall Structural
The studs get the attention, but plates and corners are where a lot of framing mistakes actually happen.
Double Top Plates and Staggered Joints
Loadbearing walls need a double top plate — two layers of the same dimension lumber run flat across the top of the studs. This isn’t just belt-and-suspenders; it ties the wall together and creates a continuous load path for whatever’s sitting on top of it, whether that’s a floor system or roof trusses.
When you have to splice a top plate (unavoidable on longer walls), the code requires that joints in the two plate layers be offset by at least 48 inches (4 feet). Never let both plate layers break at the same spot — that creates a weak point right where you need continuity most.
Corner Framing
Washington code requires at least three studs at each outside corner. This gives you enough solid wood to nail both wall directions, provides backing for interior drywall and exterior sheathing, and adds structural stiffness at what’s naturally a stress point in the frame. A common corner configuration uses two studs nailed together with a third set perpendicular to create a nailing surface on the inside corner — don’t skip this even on smaller outbuildings or additions.
Headers Over Doors and Windows
Every rough opening in a bearing wall needs a header sized to the span and load above it. Undersized headers are one of the most common framing mistakes we see on remodel jobs — homeowners will widen a window opening without upsizing the header, and it shows up later as a sagging lintel or cracked drywall above the window. If you’re changing any opening size in a loadbearing wall, this is worth running by our team or a designer before you start cutting.
Sill Plates on Concrete
Where a wall’s bottom plate sits on a concrete slab or foundation, you need pressure-treated or foundation-grade lumber for that sill plate, with proper anchor bolts or approved fasteners tying it to the concrete. This detail matters even more here than in milder climates — our freeze-thaw cycles and occasional wind events put real stress on that frame-to-foundation connection. It’s also one of the most common items flagged on inspections, so don’t skip the anchor bolts even on a “temporary” partition wall.

Cold Winters and Insulation Strategy

A 2×6 wall with quality insulation, careful air sealing at plate lines and penetrations, and attention to window/door rough opening sealing will perform dramatically better than a minimally-framed 2×4 wall through a hard winter.
Hot, Dry Summers
On the flip side, our summers get hot and dry, which means air sealing matters just as much for keeping cool air in as it does for keeping cold air out in January. Gaps around top plates, electrical boxes, and stud bays are the usual culprits for both seasons.
Soil and Foundation Variability

Before you frame a wall on a new foundation, double-check that the slab or footing is square and level. Any out-of-square condition needs to get resolved before you start laying out plates, or you’ll be fighting it through the entire wall — and possibly into your roof framing.

Proper anchorage at the sill plate, correctly sized headers, and full compliance with corner stud requirements aren’t just code checkboxes — they’re what keeps a wall performing under wind pressure it wasn’t necessarily designed to notice.
