Stake your footing locations and run string lines to confirm spacing and square. Dig to the required depth with clean, vertical sides, removing all loose soil, roots, and organic debris.

3. Check Soil and Add Base

Do the hand-moisture test. Add 3 to 4 inches of compacted gravel if your soil is soft, wet, or inconsistent. In wet excavations, add compacted stone to get above standing water.

4. Set Forms

Install sonotubes or build simple wood forms, bracing them plumb and level. Calculate your top-of-footing elevation by working backward from your finished deck height, subtracting beam, joist, decking, and hardware thickness.

Add rebar or a post anchor bracket as required, making sure it’s suspended within the pour rather than resting on the soil at the bottom.

6. Pre-Wet and Mix

Dampen the base thoroughly. Mix your concrete — bagged mix for small jobs, ready-mix delivery for larger projects — to a stiff, peanut-butter consistency. Avoid adding extra water just to make it easier to work; it weakens the final strength significantly.

7. Pour, Consolidate, and Screed

Fill the form, working the concrete with a shovel or rod to knock out air pockets, especially around rebar and in corners. Screed the top flat and level with a straight 2×4.

8. Protect and Cure

Cover the fresh footing to protect from rain, direct sun, or overnight freezing depending on the season. Keep it moist for at least three to five days for proper strength gain.

If you’re comfortable with layout, digging, forming, and finishing work, and your soil conditions are straightforward, you can absolutely tackle these yourself with the right materials and a little patience.
